Chapter 11

“What did she want?” He was obviously curious as I joined him and we began to walk.

“Oh, not much,” I said, not really sure if I wanted to talk about it. I was glad that the possibility of talking to people in my situation existed, but I still wasn’t sure that I actually wanted to take part in those conversations. Then again, what would be wrong with it?

We walked along without speaking for a minute before Casey interrupted the silence.

“Oh, come on, Sarah. Aren’t you going to tell me what she said about my paper? I feel bad enough as it is. This was about my paper, wasn’t it? She said something about your mom, didn’t she?”

I paused a beat. “Honestly, she just wanted to let me know how much she liked my paper.”

We walked a few steps before he replied. “Really?” When I glanced over at him, he looked dubious. “She really didn’t say anything about my paper?”

I hesitated, but this time I couldn’t help but interrupt my pause with laughter. I couldn’t tell if he was disappointed or relieved at the possibility that his paper hadn’t played a larger role in our conversation.

He looked at me with confusion. “What’s so funny?”

I shook my head, then took a deep breath and exhaled in a gust.

Tentatively, he began to speak. “Well, I left a lot of what you told me about your mother in there. It all sounded important for a life story.” He admitted, “You’ve had an interesting life, and I didn’t want to leave anything out.”

I wasn’t sure if it was just my relief that the dread of the assignment was over or that I was relieved at Mrs. Confrey’s reaction, or both, but I felt like a substantial weight had been lifted from my shoulders.

I glanced over at Casey then responded with a smile, “It’s OK. Really, it is.”

He looked at me with relief. “Are you sure?”

I explained, “It’s just that I was convinced that this assignment would be a catastrophe. I was sure that everything about it was going to be a disaster.” I swung my bag from side to side, gave a little skip, and continued. “But, really, that wasn’t what happened at all.” I thought about the fact that I had a new friend in Casey and someone to talk to about my situation. I had inadvertently stumbled upon the one thing I had needed, solid emotional support. Expecting the worst, I had instead gained a trusted ally. It was such a heartening change that, whatever the potential outcome of any support group, even if it was unfavorable, the stress and worry associated with the assignment would still have been worth it.

I pulled out the piece of paper that the teacher had given me.

“Mrs. Confrey gave me this.” I handed it to Casey. “She wants me to call them to see about a support group for teens in my situation. You know, kids with parents like my mother.”

“Oh, wow. They have those?”

I shrugged. “I guess I’ll find out,” I said, feeling more and more accepting of Mrs.
